Individual Vs. Community

This thought process was sparked in a class "Philosophy of Rav Soloveitchik"

Is man primarily an individual or a member of a community?

What motivates a person to act one way or another?

Is it even possible for someone to be an individual?

Humans are always surrounded by some sort of a community and there are always external influences.

Adam lived as an individual until he figured out his identity. He realized that his identity cannot be optimized without a community. "Lo Tov Lihyot Haadam Levado, Eese Lo Ezer Kenegdo"It is not good for man to be alone, I shall make him a community?

What is the function of a community?

What do you think?
