We Kneed You (to cover your knees)

What has your experience with Tznius been like?

I kid you not: I received the following email. Isn't it amazingly clear how death is connected to the lengths of a skirt?
Growing up, Tznius to me was pretty much a an area of Jewish law just like Kashrut and Shabbat was. It was something  a person did, and then life went on.
When I landed in the center of Bais Yaakov ville for seminary, I was shocked at how blown out of proportion the entire Tznius thing was.
I was extremely turned off because I felt that religion instead of being a lofty set of moral and ethical ideals being lived in harmony with the law, was becoming a technical marathon of "Who is more modest."

I remember showing up in seminary, it was my first day. A sweet girl offered to show me around. She took me to the lunch room. In front of the door was a huge sign with a diagram of female legs. There were marks up and down the leg explaining what length is too long, long enough, too short, and definitely too short. The words on the sign read WE KNEED YOU (as in to cover your knees). And please this sign was in the dining room. That pretty much killed my appetite for the evening.
I remember the lectures, that would go on for forty sometimes fifty minutes, where Rabbis or Rebbitzins would go on and on about how every passuk in Tehillim actually says that women shouldn't wear tight shirts, how there is tremendous yeridas hadoros because the tights today are transparent (no kidding the next day, half of the seminary was wearing two pairs of tights).

I remember walking on Shabbat to a meal in a skirt that reached the floor. The Rabbi of the Sem stood outside and as I passed I felt him stare me up and down and then I just knew. Later that week when I went over to ask a question, he told me: don't wear this skirt anymore, and your skirt on Shabbat was also unacceptable.

Experiences that made me want to run in the  opposite direction.

Do you have any similar experiences with Tznius?

The email below which I received in my inbox this morning reminded me of those experiences.
